Today despite the cool weather I went to train with my friend Cédric. We were looking at the size of our red dots, him on his open and me on my Production Optic. And well the Shield RMSx red dot (in 4 MOA on my match gun, and 8 MOA on the backup) was much bigger than his xxxx (I’ll withhold the name so as not to be hated by some 😉 ) mounted on his open. When you see the size and shape of the lens of this red dot, you’d think you were looking at a 16/9 screen. 

When I moved from Production to Production Optic Division I found my Shield SMS red dot then RMS super good. It was a nice change from my front sight, even with a red fiber. I found the lens already very wide, but my friends who were shooting Open found them too small (never happy). I was fine with it, and the red dots were very reliable, I shot more than 100000 rounds with SMS and RMS without breaking, ever!

And then came out at the end of November 2021 this latest iteration of the red dots from my friends at Shield Sights the Shield RMSx Red Dot for Production Optic or even Open. When I opened the box and compared the lens size of the RMSx to the RMS 2 I was using I was more than surprised. Shield says they have increased the lens size by 80%, that’s huge. I didn’t know what the benefit of a larger lens could be, I already found a red dot very good. 

But since the end of November I’ve been shooting with it, I got used to this CinemaScope version of the lens very quickly 🙂 and it’s true that it’s easier to find the red dot either when drawing, or during transitions or when you have twisted positions.  I must have shot about 5000 rounds with it and only shot one match, but the next months are full of competition. I will be able to really estimate the gain or at least the comfort during big matches like the Infinity Open in Germany or the Extreme Open Euro in Czech Republic.

If we have the same solidity as on the previous SMS and RMS models it promises good times. I’ve already heard that some red dots with large lenses break. But I have confidence in what Shield Sights produces, in the 3 years I’ve been using their red dot I’ve never broken a scope. Especially since in Production Optic, the red dots are mounted on the bolt and go through all the cycles while shooting. I was told that they take 3000G when the bolt goes back and 2000G when the bolt comes back. So 5000G at each shot, with my splits at 0,3s the red dot must take in 10000G every 3/10th of a second. Hello the slap on the electronics and the lens.
